The Anatomy of a Condo/HOA WC Claim
Garth Leone, Community Association Insurance Solutions, LLC | bio

The most overlooked line of coverage can have the most significant exposure for Condos and HOAs. In this course, participants learn the two basic exposures every Condo/HOA has – even if they have no employees. Beyond a claims and coverage discussion, the course starts with an entertaining and informative history of the industry and includes segments on increasing volunteerism, best practices for use of volunteers and techniques to manage the WC exposure of service providers.Become familiar with the “do’s and don’ts” for managing a Bed Bug infestation

  1. Have an understanding of the history of Common Interest Developments (Condos, HOAs POAs etc.) and how the development of the industry has driven coverage needs
  2. Understand the 2 basic WC exposures every common interest development faces
  3. Be able to identify the key components of Heiman vs WCAB
  4. Understand how the absence of coverage affected the outcome of that landmark case
  5. Identify other specific claims and coverage responses
  6. Understand best practices around the use of volunteers
  7. Implement techniques to mitigate the risk of uninsured contractors

Personal Insurance and the coordination with Associations

An overview of how to set up the documents for insurance coverage and the different types of requirements that are outlined in these documents. There is flexibility of the documents in regards to insurance and using the documents to create rules and regulations. The course will cover examples of All In coverage, Bare Walls and everything in between in order to teach how the association can communicate coverage to the members so they can purchase profit coverage.

  1. How to read the documents and what is contained within them regarding insurance
  2. How to help the property managers understand what coverage owners need personally and the association needs per their documents

Herman Fasbender
Commercial Insurance Consultant, Marsh & McLennan Agency

Herman Fesbender has been in the insurance business for over 25 years and brings a creative, enthusiastic and entrepreneurial spirit to his work every day. His experience as a former insurance agency owner has given him a keen eye for the big picture and, in particular, the ability to see potential risk exposure that needs to be addressed.

Herman specializes in community association and construction risk management and insurance. In his role as a Community Association Specialist at MMA, he has his finger on the pulse of the industry at all times to keep informed about any new developments that may impact his clients and their coverage. He believes that the risk management approach to insurance is in the best interest of his clients and the only way to ensure a decrease in their total cost of risk.

Herman is involved in numerous local professional organizations and charitable efforts. He is married and has two sons.

Garth Leone
Founder and HOA Program Manager, CAIS/MGAlive.com

Garth M. Leone is a nationally recognized expert in community associations. His has been an active participant in what he calls the greatest social experiment of modern time since 1992. He has served the industry in the areas of insurance, education, business development, corporate and trade association operations, & customer service. He has worked with professional management firms, trade associations, insurance agencies and other service providers, as well as various government/regulatory entities across the country.

Mr. Leone served on the board of directors of the Executive Council of Homeowners (ECHO) where he was an author and chief instructor of the “Boot Camp for Board Members” training program. He has also chaired and served on numerous ECHO and Community Associations Institute's committees including Education, Membership, Speaker Development and Strategic Planning. He is a two-time speaker/trainer of the year for his local CAI chapters and recently joined the faculty of the California Association of Community Managers' Certified Community Association Manager, (CCAMsm) education program.

He held the prestigious CIC® Designation (Certified Insurance Counselor) for retail agent from the National Alliance for Insurance Education and has served on numerous insurance company product development teams in the area of Common Interest Development products. He is the founder and visionary behind ProducerU, a ‘vocational school’ approach to training the next generation of insurance leaders. He authored the ProducerU foundational program called ‘The TEAM Approach’ and has been a guest instructor and coach at numerous insurance industry training events including American Agents Alliance, IBAWest, Insurance Professionals of Sacramento, IBO and The Ultimate Producer School.

In addition to his speaking and training roles within the community association & insurance industries, Mr. Leone has been a frequent keynote speaker, strategic planning facilitator and trainer for a diverse variety of businesses, trade associations and non-profit organizations including Terminix, Building Owners and Managers Association, Association of Professional Reserve Annalist, William Jessup University, El Dorado Hills & Folsom Youth Lacrosse clubs, Sears Point Raceway and the ATV Safety Institute.

Mr. Leone is a self-proclaimed ‘serial entrepreneur’ and has been the founder, owner and operator of a variety of businesses and civic organizations including a retail insurance agency, a national wholesale insurance program administrator, a vocational school, an executive coaching firm, non-profit youth sports club, and Youth, HS, and Collegiate sports and conditioning training company. He also has a servant’s heart and has volunteered his time as a soccer, lacrosse and ice hockey coach, church youth group leader, Men’s group leader and served on various other church and community nonprofit committees and boards.

When he’s not traveling the country training CID industry, insurance, and business professionals, he enjoys boating with his wife and 3 children, coaching/playing Lacrosse or Ice Hockey, Hunting and Fly Fishing.

Jeffrey Mayhew has been with American Family for 24 years as an agent and district sales manager. For the past 17, he has owned the Jeffrey Mayhew Agency in Plymouth. They currently insure more than 500 associations in the metro and insure more than 3200 households. They have grown to 12 employees that all are versed in the coverage for associations and owners. Jeffrey Mayhew Agency writes business in MN, WI, ND, SD, IA, IL, IN, MO, CO, AZ, WA and he holds a degree from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire in Management. Jeffrey Mayhew is married to Lynette for over 24 years and they have three daughters.
